THE COUNTY’S ROAD ROLLER.
FINALLY SHELVED. After being discussed on several occasions the question of obtaining a mad roller for the County Council was anally shelved on Wednesday. , Cr.’ Porn Li moved that the Council consider the question of procuring a steam roller, in doing so lie said the •whole question hinged on finance. ISO far it had been impossible to get rid of the waggon, and ho thought that it was wrong to hold up the buying of the roller any longer on account ol the waggon. .11 an eighth of a penny of the Comity’s rates were car-mark-ed it would iiroducc a sum of .£Ol2. He suggested" that a rate of one-six-teenth of a penny might he struck, 'this would produce £3OO a year, it therefore taking three years to pay foi the roller. Ho'would merely move that a roller ho acquired, : leaving it to other mem hers to suggest ways <i net means. The Engineer said a roller with scarifier attached would cost about £OOO. The Chairman 1 pointed out that it was necessary to consider the extra woi king expenses involved. Cr. 'Maxwell suggested l that some airangeiucnt might lie Come to with the Borough Council. 1 1 Or. Astbury moved that a rate of a ■Mxboenth'of a penny be struck; but it was pointed out that this would bring the rates over the limit. Cr. Porritt said the Council had previously got out of light places and they should be able to fix up flic finance tor the roller. Cr. Astbui v moved, and Cr. Maxwell seconded, that the matter ho deferred until the new Council is elected. This was carried.
