FIRST GRADE. STRATFORD v. CLIFTON. Tlib above match eventuated on the Stratford A. and P. Association s show grounds on Thursday afternoon, in the presence of a large number of spectators. The weather was anything but good, but the ground war in good order. The match lias beer looted forward to with groat interest for some time, both teams being coir (idont of success. The following ro presented their respective teams;— CLIFTON. Full-back. George. Threequartors: Y. Tate, C. .Tate, Goodwin. Five-eighth: Ji'('<r]cc;on. ' Half: Coleman. Wing Forwards: Kyle and Crawley. Forwards: Fairley, R. Thomas, Loveridgc, De Blois, Hicks, Lash, and Jones. STRATFORD. Full-back: Kivell. Three-quarters,a;;. ( i. . Jcnos, Cameron, Anderson. Five-eighth: t Stewart. Half: Woods. Wing-forwards: Bonner, Foaron. Forwards: Boon, Smith, Young, Melville, James Marchant and Burgess. Clifton won the toss and took tin' north end of the field. - Cameron kicked off for Stratford, and play wa; soon in full swing. Stratford wa: awarded a free kick shortly after the commencement for off-side play. Colo man here obtained a nasty- knocl on the head, and play was suspender for a while. On play resuming Stratford removed play to Clifton’s quarters, where the homo team was awarded another free kick, Cameroi finding the line at half-way flag Clifton shortly after obtained a mark George making an unsuccessful shot at goal, tho Reds returning to tone! sit the 25 yards flag. A scrum was formed on tho Reds’ line, but Bonner relieved. • Clifton. then rallied and carried the ball to tho hornteam’s; line, whore Woods obtained : mark, the ball going into centre Cameron shortly afterwards marked and made a poor attempt at goal After a scramble on Clifton’s line Burgos's all but scored, but was saved by a lucky kick, Goodwin kick ing the ball out of Ids hands. I smart piece of following up by Egglo ston from a throw in, carried tin ball at foot, and beating Jones anc Kivell badly, ended in him scoring first blood. George took tho kick but wont over tho post. ■ Clifton 3, Stratford 0. After the kick off, Stratford for wards carried tho ball well into midfield, where Clifton was awarded s free kick, Kivell returning into touch Play was removed to tho visitors lino, where Woods being too anxious to get tho ball, a free kick was awarded against Stratford, the bal going out at mid-field. A lino for ward rush, headed by George am Young, compelled the home team t' force down." Half time was thei sounded, with no alteration to tin score.
On resuming, Coleman set the ball rolling, Camei on returned. Melville hero obtained a knock to his shoul dor. Shortly afterwards, Kivell relieved the home team hy a good mark Clive and take play ensued. Cameron eventually getting away, and waf awarded a free kick for obstruction, finding the line. Cameron again oh tained the leather and made a good run, but was grasped by Goodwin in good stylo, relieving a somewhat dangerous position. A scrum followed Anderson, getting the ball, kicked into touch. Scrummaging was next indulged in, ending in Cameron getting a free kick, and potted a splendid goal from half-way amidst great cheering from Ilia spectators. Stratford 11, Clifton 3. play now became of a brisk nature, each team putting forth its best efforts, Stratford eventually work ing the leather into Clifton’s territory, Kivell getting the hall and sent it, into touch. Clifton agair centralised. The home team marked well, and carried the ball to Clifton’s goal line, Clifton just saying a certain score by a chance kick Eggleson saved his side on several occasions. Play still continued brisk in the visitors’ territory,- until a forward rush hy the Clifton forwards shifted play to Stratford’s territory. Kivell relieved. A scramble ensued, Clifton eventually breaking away, but was prevented by a free kick awarded to the rods, Cameron finding the lint) at the half-way flag. Upon here carried the leather into the visi-
tors ’territory, where Clifton was awarded a free kick. A scrum lowed. Hicks' and Jones heading a lino rush carried the ball to the home team’s Hue, compelling them to force. Coleman obtained a mark, Kivell returning into touch. Here a series of scrums and free kicks followed, one of which S. George made a good but unsuccessful, attempt at goal. Another'; scramble followed, George having another attempt, tho ball going wide. Kivell forced. Stratford again rallied, and brought play to mid-field, Kivelf sending the ball into touch. Time was then sounded. The game, which was hard fought from beginning to end, resulted in a draw. Stratford 3, Clifton 3., Mr F. Spurdlo held the whistle, and gavel general satisfaction. TUKAPA (20) v. ELTHAM (3). Tukapa and Pit ham mot at Eltham yesterday, a good game resulting, both teams showing some fine play. A good number of juniors played , with Eltham. ihe ground was in excellent order. 'Play went to Tukapa territory aftor the. kick-off, but did not remain there long, play moving rapidly up and down the field. At half time the f i co '"9 was in Tukapa?s favour, J.
