TARIKI NOTES.

(From our own Correspondent.) A social and dance was held on the 14th instant in Mr Simon’s spacious barn to farewell Mr and Mrs T. Gardiner, who are shortly leaving the district Though a rough, wet evening deterred many who were anxious to attend from coming, the accommodation 'was taxed to the utmost, a large and representative, gathering of settlers from far and near mustering for the occasion, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Mr N. Step! lenson, in presenting Mr Gardiner with a handsome marble chiming clock from the residents of Dio locality, asked him to accept the, pampas, a sinaJ|.. mpipoflt.p of Mho .esteem aiid regard in Which lib and Mrs Gardiner were held by the many friends they were leaving behind in Tariki. Although Mr Gardiner was deservedly popular throughout the district, perhaps only those who had been brought into close contact with him were able to fully appreciate his sterling merit as a settler and neighbour. (Applause.) Continuing, the speaker referred to the valuable, assistance Mr Gardiner had rendered as a members of* local sports’ committees, and concluded by wishing him and Mrs Gardiner on behalf of those present every happiness and prosperity in the future. Mr Gardiner, in replying on behalf of himself and his wife, thanked those present for the social tendered to t lii'iii n«i- also, * Die hands )• ' riresent they had just made, which they should always treasure in memory of, the happy time they had spent in Tariki and the many friends they were leaving behind. He thanked Mr Stephenson for the kind remarks lie had made, and although ho felt lie did not merit many of Diem ho thanked them very heartily for their good wishes, and could assure thorn that, wherever they went they would never forget the pleasant time they had spent that evening or Die many friends they had in Tariki. (Applouse). Dancing was kept up nptil an early hour. Mr Stanley Walker acted as M.C. and excellent • music was provided by Messrs T. Y. and C. Snn.ons and H. Walker. A veiy successful function was concluded by- a hoartv rendering of “Anld Lang Syne” and cheers for the guests of the evening.
