THE WICKEDNESS OF SYDNEY.
The Rev. James Barker, president ol the Baptist Union, was accorded a welcome in the Baptist Church, Grafton, last week. In bis address lie said bo was delighted to visit the North Coast. Sydney was a great city, and the life was fast and furious, and exhaustive. The city presented many problems. God Almighty bad done a great deal in the direction of making it beautiful, hut there was a groat deal of evil and wickedness, which tended to make it ugly. He came from South Australia, where religion occupied a more prominent position, and the Sabbath was observed reverently. Sydney positively, appalled He saw there people like those, of Nineveh, given to idolatry'and seeking after tilings which perish with the using. 'fbe Church was beset with difficulties. Every form of evil 'hampered the churches joining to present a united front against it and using ever;, possible weapon pf attack to diminish this increasing evil, which threatened the very life of the'churches. " Local ?—'y od lo (Ta(G g,.U TRdo A recent visitor to the Wellington links gave some members an interesting description of a scheme for the retrieving of balls from streams on the Hongkong links. 'Trained cormorants are kept at the various crossings, ami n ring round the neck prevents the bird from swallowing I lie ball. Also, each golfer carries small pieces of fish in bis pocket to reward llie birds when successful. This story was told late at night (says the “Bust”) by a naval man who was picking bis way from one week-end cottage to .another utter lights out.,’
