TRADE WITH AMERICA.
ROOM FOR EXPANSION. WHAT SIR JOSEPH WARD THINKS. The interest which is taken in the Eastern States of America in the. possibility of a trade between there and Now Zealand was evidenced by the invitations extended to Sir Joseph Ward ■Miv-'tvro. bodies-of -merchants in New V ork
“They were all very much interested,” remarked the Prime to the London correspondent of the Now Zealand “Herald,” “in the possibility of" extending the trade with New Zealand. In discussing the matter .1 refer to the fact that as a matter of policy wc in New Zealand gave a preference to English products, and they in America, on the other hand had a tariff which made it difficult lor New Zealanders to do business with them. But in spite of these lacts I stated that if they were prepared to meet ns on fair and equitable lines there was room for a trade in some of our products. 1 committed myself to nothing, beyond expressing that opinion as worthy ol consideration iii both countries.”
Sir Joseph stated that large quantities of New Zealand wool were used in America, but it had to lie purchased In London and sent across. He also stated that in Canada—on the western side at all events — Inc consumers would hud our dairy produce and frozen moat cheaper than :inv other on which they had to pay the heavy railage across the continent. They could get. stuff lauded m the western districts at a lower freightage from New Zealand than by rail from the Eastern States across Inc Selkirks and the Rookies. “Wherever I went,” said fair Joseph, “I found prospects of tvadi development, and I said that Now Zealand was anxious to have fresh, markets for a portion of her large uni increasing output of natural products. J think there is a prospect of :v certain amount of our meat, butter, iml cheese getting into both Canada and id io United States if wc had proper facilities.”
