SMALLPOX AMONGST BLACKS. Adelaide, June 8. The Director of the Museum reports that aboriginal remains recently found in the Murray River district bear evi deuce or the existence of a virulent dis case, apparently smallpox, amongst the aborigines. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONES. Sydney, June 8. The Automatic Telephones Company has been formed with a capital of a quarter of a million to purchase the Australasian agency of the Automatic Electric Co. ot Chicago. The company anticipate saving over 50 per cent, in telephone working. QUEENSLAND’S POPULATION. Brisbane, June f>. The census shows the population of the State to be 011,309, an increase of 108,103 since 1901. PUNISHING NON-VOTERS. Perth, June 8. A Woman’s National League deputation asking the Acting-Premier to impose a fine of £3 for the first offence in the case of qualified voters not using their privileges and for the second offence a month’s imprisonment. The Minister replied that he considered the proposal too harsh, but some penalty might be provided. TAXING MOTOR-CARS FOR ROADS. Sydney, Juno 8. The Marine Board of Enquiry into the loss of the Yongala has opened. Mr. Wareham, the Queensland manager of the Adelaide Steamship Co., in his evidence, expressed the opinion that the vessel had been blown out of her coursi and struck a rock and sunk.
