The managing director of the Eh’bw Main colliery gave evidence to show that operations were hampered by the inability to get suitable steamers to carry coal. THE COLD SNAP. The president of the Board of Health states that the leprous rats found in Melbourne arc not new, although rare. They are found in many parts of tli world, including in Sydney last year. ATTEMPT TO WRECK A TRAIN. Sydney, June 7. A determined attempt was made to wreck a train at Sea Lake. Two heavy pieces of timber were found on the line just before the train was due. EDITOR AND JUDGE. Melbourne, June 7. The case in which Air. Nick,oils, editor of the Hobart Mercury, was charged with contempt of court, was dismissed by the High Court. The Chief Justice said the judge was not so much open to libel as anybody else. Contempt was to obstruct or interfere with the court. [Tho editor was cited for contempt for having published a leader declaring that Mr. Justice Higgins was a political judge.] STRIKERS "RESUME WORK. Sydney, June 7. The Tcralba miners, after striking for six months, decided to accept the proprietors’ offer and will return to work. The dispute will be referred to an independent board. THE JAPANESE EXPLORERS. AN OATH UNFULFILLED. Sydney, Juno 7. It is stated authoritatively that the Japanese explorers, before leaving home, took an oath not to return until they reached tho South Polo. The captain of tho ship, who had not. taken tho oath, returned to Japan to place the true position before the public in the hope of raising additional funds.
