ACCIDENT TO A WALL.
RAVAGES OF THE TOREDO. In reporting to the Auckland Harbour Hoard under date of May 17th, on the recent accident to the timber breastwork westward of the Hobson
Strait Wharf, tho engineer (Mr. \V. H. Hamer) slated: —“A length of al)nnt 80ft of I he breastwork has been damaged by Iho breaking away of the jales owing to the lower tie brace and iho timber sheathing being considerably weakened Ivy the ravages of (he teredo. Some live years ago 1 had some additional steel tie bars placed in this breastwork, and sonic fix months ago I gave instructions that no heavy weights were to be placed upon this frontage. A few days since ! instructed I lie foreman of works to open ouj and, if possible, r> place I i)o lower timber tie by steel ! Ibars; and only yesterday I requested yon and the vice-chairman to inspect the work with mo, and then 1 recommended that possibly the cheapest way would bo to draw all trer/a timber piles and replace them l>v a solid concrete retaining walk- I also showed yon tin; damage done by I Iso loredo to the timber brear.twr.rk of t'ne Hobson 81 reel- reclainalion, which, after only eight years’ life, shows signs of ravages by these marine pests.. Tin timber breastwork at the Auckland deck bead, epos,cite (he Hoard a ol’iees, failed in a similar way, and these were belli replaced by cou-cr-To walls." Tba report was referred to the Works Committee.
