POPULATION AND TRADE IN CANADA.
it is estimated that the census in Canada will show a population of a little over 8,000,000. In, order to realise the vast strides which Canada has been making in* the past decade, one must compare the population increase with, that at previous censuses. The first complete census was taken in 187.1, when the population was returned at .‘1.089,257. in 1881 it had risen to 1,321,810, in 1891 to 1,833,239 and in 1901 to 5,371,315. It will thus be seen that the progress of the past ten years lias been about live times as fast as the average for the previous census periods. The railway companies (according to an Ottawa : oiTesp-mdcrit) arc setting up fresh passenger and freight records every week, as the new season progresses. Ti'" traflie to the West was never bet- !<;. All tno prineip.il lines are parjVipating in Lire prevailing briskness of demand. Spring business generally is excellent in ail the provinces. The factories are working at top pressure. to keep pace with the orders in hard Tod coming in every day. The favourable weather conditions marking the early days of tire season have rlimulatcd trade in all directions. Agi icnll.ur.ii implement maiinl'ncturers report that the demand for farm ma"iiii'cry in the Pi nii io Provinces and in Oi'torio is exceeding all previous experience.
