PEARL POACHERS.
SCHOONERS SEIZED. FOR PEARL FISHING. Perth, May 31. The gunboat Oaynndah towed to Broome two pearl schooners, called the Harriet- and Firtuna, (lying the Dutch flag, and handed them over to the Customs authorities. They were seized for illegal pearl pouching. A GUNBOAT TO PATROL THE COAST. Melbourne, May 31. The Minister for Customs explains in regard to the seizure of Hie schooners that for a considerable time the Customs Department had been closely watch ing the visits of foreign vessels on the Westraliaij coast, which, without authority or recognition of the laws, were engaged in pearling and other fishing. They were manned by Eastern crews. Besides (he loss to the revenue through their failing to pay duty on dutiable goods, there was the danger of the introduction of contagions diseases by undesirable aliens. If has been decided that the gunboat shall patrol the coast from Thursday Island to Goraldton. The Minister is not vet decided what to do with the captured schooners.
