CABLE NEWS

By Kb'Ctn’e Telegraph—;JMpy i United IV-- i A'snciatioii

BRITAIN'S BET FILM IXATIOX. Louden, .May 31. The conference of the Defence Com- | mil tee has concluded. Whatever the other results of the conference may achieve, the deliberations on defence stand out a prominent success. A good understanding was established after an excellent exposition of Britain's foreign policy. The committee apparently made it clear that apart from any assistance the overseas dominions rendered, .Britain would not de--1 viate from its firm resolve to maintain I the defence and integrity of every part of the Empire single-handed.

The conference resumes »ri Thursday, when it will discuss the Declaration of London. It is expected the conference will adjourn on Friday over Whitsuntide. - The conference cabled its congratulations to South Africa on the first anniversary of its political union. Lord Haldane, Minister for AVer, addressing the London University officers training corps, said the conference ol dominion Premiers, the Home Ministers, and Army and Navy experts was a source'of profound satisfaction. “Wr have opened our minds to each oilier.", ho said, ‘'and taken each other into our confidence. We found we had common purposes and objects and a common mind. We have now come to a common conclusion on problems which until recently were obscure and difficult. We believe that last week will turn out memorable in the Empire’s history. One of the groat problems tins generation bad to solve was how to come to the aid of the more distant parts of the Empire should they be in peril? It won!-.! ho a tremendous burden to impose upon those Islands to send an expeditionary force, but it might be,solved if the rest of the nation were ready to take up the burden.”
