The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. THURSDAY, JUNE 1, 1911. PUBLIC HOLIDAYS.
When the Legislature undertook lost session to pass :i measure dealing with public holidays, it was thought this vexed question had been satisfactorily solved; but, the very first occasion upon which it is necessary to celebrate the anniversary of King George’s birthday, the same old trouble arises. The Act of last session provides that if the Sovereign s birthday falls on a Sunday, then it must ho observed on the following Monday. It falls on a Saturday, and one section of the business community is compelled by law +o keep the holiday on that day, while the other is at liberty to do as it pleases; but in the large majority of cases Monday will be observed/ What is really required is: if the anniversary of the Sovereign’s birthday is made a statutory holiday for factory hands, it should ho made equally, so for shops and offices; and what is more, the date upon which Use event falls should ho stridjly adhered to. Experience has proved that it is useless to trust to the people to regulate those matters: The only sale way to ensure uniformity is to amend the Public Holidays Act in the diicction wo have indicated.
