Gisborne, May 29. ,The old Te Arai homestead, consisting of twelve rooms, owned and occupied by Mrs. 'Winifred Knapmann, was totally destroyed by lire yesteruiy morning. One of the workmen, i-ho was sleeping in the house, was ,ust got out in time. The house was msured in the State office for £3OO, ind the furniture for £126. A STARTLING SURPRISE. (Per Press Association,) Gisborne, May 29. Upon his return from Auckland regterday, Mr. Harold Kane,, chemist, nado a rather startling discovery, for n visiting his shop he found the manner (Samuel Taylor) lying dead. A'hen Mr. Kane wont to the shop it ras locked up. He went away, but sturned later, and as the shop was dill closed, he thought that something .as wrong. Ho climbed through a vindow, and discovered Taylor lying lead on the floor. 'Deceased was a 'oraparatively young man, and had been in Mr. Kane’s employ since Januiry last. Ho leaves a wife and family, vho were shortly to join him, from England. Mr. Kane’s object in returning to Gisborne was to resume control of the business. Deceased had been drinking. THE RUNAWAY TRAIN.

MR. CLAUDE REWARDED

The Government lias presented Mr. Claude, of Westfield, with £SO as a •eward for Id's prompt and capable action in stopping the runaway train :t Otalmhu on the night of April 17th, lluis saving the Main Trunk train from the possibility of collision. En(idry showed that the express* driver had’soon the other train, and pulled dp before Mr. Claude displayed the red light, and the driver, therefore, has been granted £lO bonus for keeping a good look-out.

By Telegraph. —Press Association Wellington, Last Night. The retail price of butter, Is 2d per pound, remains unchanged at present. There are indications, however, that a slight rise, probably a penny per pound, will take place very shortly. Yesterday a Wellington house purchased a line of Auckland butler, fiOO cases, at 12'/id per pound, f.0.b.. Auckland, and, working this out, he says that a rise in the retail price cannot bo avoided.
