THE STRATFORD FIRE. The Chairman's action iu confirming arrangements ma.de by the Stratford school committee for the temporary carrying on of the various classes, and for authorising the temporary fixing up of the electric light in the High School room, was approved, and a vote of thanks was passed to the school committee, the headmaster and staff for the promptitude they had shown in making all the necessary arrangements. .SCHOOL COMMITTEES. J IE MtlETlS’ Tn A VKLEGCO EX BEXSES. The Board'received several replies to its circular in reference to members’ travelling allowances. Tin 1 Nelson Board wrote that the scale of allowances made by the Taranaki Board prior to .‘list December. 101-d. appeared to bo reasonable. However, it was thought that no alteration could be made to that portion of the Endcalion Amendment Act dealing with numbers’ Ira veiling Allowances. The reply from the Napier Board was that the practice there was to pay only the actual train or coach fares and hotel expenses, and, that vouchers had to he produced by numbers *for sums ot live shillings or /over. The North Canterbury Board’s was that it was not taking any action in regard to the question, although u was of opinion that the provisions of the amending Act were unnecessary. Under the old arrangement the travelling expenses were fixed as follows: —Five miles, and under, as fid; over live • miles ua?i under ten, Ids (id; over ten miles, and under 15, l. (ill; 15 miles anil over, .Cl Is. Under the new Act it was possible for a member to charge for conveyance to aim from the meetings, although as a mailer of fact this' le.d not been the practice, the town, members having fixed upon a small sum (a lew shillings) e.s being reasonable in their case, and the members living in the country will add the cost of railway fare. The Greymoath Board was at one with the Taranaki Board with regard lo clause of the amended Act. Up to December m, EllO. the Board paid what it considered to he reasonable travelling expenses lo its country members. When the met ting or meetings occupied one day only, members resident over five miles bv rail fiom the boaid room received 2.U for their attendance, ami members who redded over 20 miles from the hoard room (if railway connection dnl not exist) received £3 3s for their at tendance. if the meetings extended to the second day. an additional £1 was paid to each country member.
