At the eighth conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Australia, the vice-president, A 1 r. A S. Cheadlc, delivered an address in which he stated that the following totals showed the remarkable expansion that had taken place in the total trades of Australia during the last three voars:— UHIS ... £VI 1,100,Ml I<K)S) .... 110,-190,932 ]})io ... 133,9d3,30d The exports last year constituted a record, with a total of £7-1, If) i .027. The expansion that had taken place in the wool industry had been more than equalled by the growth of the wheat trade. Favoured by good seasons and high prices, the Value of wheat exported from tlie Commonwealth rose from £O,028,083 in 1909 to £9,921,823 in 1910. A great gain in financial strength was disclosed by the banking position. The capital and liabilities of the banks on December 31, 1910. totalled £230,101,077), as, ngainst £209.009,307 in 1909. Australia was badly in need of population, lion.
