BREACH OF PROMISE. (T r Press Association.) Hamilton, May 23. At the Supreme Court yesterday in a bieach of promise case, in which Alice Beatrice Barker claimed £551 damages against Walter Bird, both <jf Waihi, a vwidict was given icr plaintiff for £25.
FIRES.
(Per Press Association.) Gisborne, May 23. An eight-roomed house at Waerc-nga-o-kui i, owned and occupied by Mr. Carlycon, slicepfarmor, was destroyed by firs. The house was insured for £<loo iu the Victoria Office. The furniturs was uninsured. Rsefton, May 23. Tho first- firs for four years occurred this morning, Wills and Co.’s large drapery and grocery store on Buller Road being burned to the ground. Owing to economy in water due to dry weather, tiro 'water was glow in corning. There was a heavy loss, as tiie firm was carrying £7OOO worth of stock, which was insured for £IBOO on'y, £3OO each being in the Standard, South British, New Zealand, Victoria, Norwich Union, and Phoenix offices.

A sitting of the Conciliation Council was hold to-day, Mr. Hally presiding, to "hear an application hy the employers in the trawling industry for a variation of the terms of the agreement in the direction of per nutting freedom of contract. The employers contended that under the present award it was impassible to conduct the fishing industry at a.profit, and unless a modification was agreed to the boats would have to lay up, and a number of men bo thrown out of work. The Union would net agree to freedom of contract, and, there being no prospect of n settlement, the -casg was referred to the Arbitration Po.ilrt.;;.' '.
