SUGAR BEET. (Received 23, 10.10 a.m.) London, May 22. “Licht” estimates that the production of sugar beet has increased by 796,000 tons, and that the increase for the year will bo 939,000 tons. LONDON WOOL SALES. (Received 23, 10.10 a.in.j London, M ay 22. The wool sales were animated at late rates, the United States buying some of the best medium crossbreds. SLANDER CASE APPEAL. (Received 23, 10.10 a.m.) London, May 22. Sir Algernon West’s appeal against the judgment for his daughter-in-law in the recent slander case is proceeding.
IMPERIAL CONFERENCE. OPENED TO-DAY. (Received 23, 12.30 p.m.) London, Alov 22. The Imperial Conference aits four mornings weekly at the Foreign Office, but will hold other meetings according to necessity. The conference opens to-morrow. It is likely the press will be admitted to the Premier’s speech welcoming the delegates, and it will be decided afterwards whether they shall be admitted to the proceedings. Mr Asquith’s guests to-night included the Lord High Chancellor,i. Lords Aberdeen, Minto, Beauchamp, 1 Milner, Kitchener, Tennyson', Denman, Sir CJ. Reid, and Sir W. HallJones.

Chinese were attacked at Torreon by the insurgents, and 225 Chinese killed. '
