VANCOUVER STEAMER SERVICE.
NEW SOUTH WALES ANXIOUS. (Received 23, 0 a.m.) Sydney, May 23. Air. Holman wrote to Mr. Hughes declaring that the State Government felt concern in the matter of the maintenance of, a regular service between Sydney and Vancouver. The now contract between the Canadian and New Zealand Governments would not oblige the contractors to send steamers West. The Auckland steamers would probably run to Australia, but New Zealand bad preference over ■space; and apart from the consideration of the money annually expended in connection with steamers on wages, coaling, and docking, amounting to £i.uw,ooo, there was a possibility of jeopardising trade. He urged that Air Fisher be communicated with in view of tlie approaching conference with Sir-Wilfrid Laurier. » Mr. Hughes replied that representations had been forwarded to Air.
