BOROUGH LOAN PROPOSALS.

FURTHER CONSIDERATION. The Borough Council met last night to furtnov consider the loan proposals. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Masters), and Crs. Sangster, Boon, Hoaly, Morison, McAllister, Lawson, and King. , South-East and Sculh-Wost Quarters. The schedules in connection with the north-east and north-west portions of the town having been dealt with by the old Council, the Council proceeded to the consideration of the proposals in connection with the southeast and south-west portions. Pago Street. Trim up from Broadway to Brecon Road.—The Mayor said perhaps the item should be deleted, as the work was more one for the Council’s own men.—Cr. Morison said the work mentioned should not be done unless in conjunction with it a footpath was made on the north side of the street as far as the Domain.—Cr. Paget said the money spent on the footpath would be wasted—nobody would use the footpath.—The item was left unaltered. Celia Street, From full width to Brecon Road.— On Cr. Healy’s motion it was decided to carry the formation on as far as the Borough boundary. Extend metal to channel from Broadway to Mr Moore’s.—Decided to take the work v ono or two chains beyond Mr Moore’s. Widen footpath from Mr Moore’s to Borough boundary.—Retained. Improve Grades?—Decided to mention specially the points near Messrs Porritt and Broadley’s. Broadway. Metal full width from Celia Street to about 20 feet beyond Romeo Street. —Cr. King thought the work was unnecessary.—Cr. Paget moved that the work should be carried about two chains past Romeo Street—to the top of the hill.—Cr. King said he thought Broadway South was a very good street without anything further being done to it. Ho thought moneyon this work would be wasted.—Cr. Paget’s amendment was carried. Raise hollow south of Warwick Road.—Retained. Romeo Street.—On the motion of Dr. Paget, extended similarly to metalling. Miranda Street. Form and gravel from Romeo Street to Warwick Road.—Retained. Trim up from Celia Street to Romeo Street.—-Retained. Form and gravel footpath on west side from Celia Street to Romeo Street.—Dr. Paget moved to eliminate the item. He said the path was not needed, as it would serve onlyone gate.—The Mayor said that in his opinion the work was highly- nccessary.—Cr. Lawson seconded Cr. Paget’s amendment.—Cr. Morison said the fact that there were no houses on that side of the street did not weigh with him. Everybody, be saic£ went to the hospital frequenly-. Cr. Paget said ho had no desire to eliminate useful works; but there was not an unlimited amount of money-, and unnecessary works should not be included.—The item was finally retained. Form and gravel footpath on n est side from Romeo Street to Mr, Walsh’s.—Retained. Orlando Street South. Form and gravel footpath m east side from Lear Street to Celia Street. —Retained. Warwick Road East.

Lawson’s motion the question of forming Juliet Street from Lear Street to Celia Street was referred to the committee in cliargo of the quarter for a report. Lear Street. Form and gravel footpath on north side from Broadway to Ariel Street.— Retained. Ariel Street. Form and metal from Lear Street to about two chains south of Celia Street.—Retained. Romeo Street. Form and gravel footpath from Mr. G. Scott’s to front of section 540. Retained. Orlando Street. Form, grade and metal west half from Romeo Street to Warwick Road. —Retained. Portia Street. Form and gravel footpath on east side from Page Street to about live chains southward.—Retained. Form road full width from Page Street to Celia Street.—Retained. Form, grade, metal and footpath on west side from Celia Street to Warwick Road.—Retained. Cr. Boon moved that the items be left over until the matter of the Hospital Board’s request to close the street had been dealt with. He said it looked like ignoring the Board.— The motion was lost. Hamlet Street. Fill in hollows and form full width from Page Street to Warwick Road. —Retained. Form and gravel footpath on both sides from Page Street to Celia Street —Retained. Form and gravel footpaths on east side from Celia Street to Reader’s, and on west side from Celia Street to Warwick Road.—On Cr. Paget’s motion the footpath on the cast side was extended to Romeo Street. North-west Quarter. Cr. King brought up a matter in the north-east quarter, and it was decided, in view of the new members on the Council, that the northern quarters should bo again gone through. Pembroke Road.—lt was decided to form a footpath on the north side where the metal is full width. Miranda Street.—Cr. Paget moved that the whole of the recommendations be referred back to the committee. The work was very heavy.—The motion was carried, and Cr. McAllister was added to the committee to take the place vacated by Mr, Young. The majority of the items wore passed unaltered. North-cast Quarter. After the north-west quarter had been dealt with Cr. Hoaly moved that the Council adjourn. Cr. Paget moved further that the matter of tiio Hospital site should bo gone into before anything else was done. It would only take a few minutes. Broadway.—The extension of metal to the channel on the western side from Pembroke Road was altered to extend to Flint Road.—lt was decided to kerb and channel the footpath on the west side from Regan Street to Flint Road. Ariel Street.—A footpath was- provided on the cast side from Fenton Street to Cloton Road. Cordelia Street.—The whole of the items wore referred hack to the committee, to which Cr. Sangster was lidded. Orlando Street.—Cr. Paget moved that the formation to full width bo from Regan Street to Pembroke Road, and not from Fenton Street to Pembroke Road.—Cr. King said it was desirable to improve the look of the streets near the centre of the town.—Cr. Morison also supported the work being; done from Fenton Street. Or. Paget said there was a good footpath to the park, which was all that was necessary. In addition the work would not benefit anybody using the street.—Cr. Sangster said the gully could very well be dealt with by having trees planted round it.—Cr. McAllister supported work being done from Regan Street.—Cr. King said there was much heavier work in other items which had been passed. Cr. Paget: But they are useful works—this is merely to satisfy Cr. King’s aesthetic taste.—lt was‘finally decided that the work extend from Fenton Stret to Pembroke Road.—Cr.
