Mr E. B. Bohan is acting as manager of the Bank of Australasia, Invercargill, during the absence of Mr H. P. O’Brien in London. Mr R. E. A. Mahon, of the Wellington branch will act as accountant.
Major R. D. Cox, assistant director of the Army Educational Welfare Service, Auckland, is at present visiting Invercargill.
Flight Lieutenant R. E. Stevenson, of the Sunderland flying boat base, Auckland, is visiting Invercargill on leave. *
Mr Haagen Holenbergh, noted Danish pianist, who will give a pianoforte recital in St Mary’s Hall tonight, arrived in Invercargill yesterday. Mr H. Jefferies will leave Invercargill early next month for Christchurch, where he will live in future. Mr Jefferies was a member of the Committee for the Municipal Control and Ownership of Hotels, and played an active part in the long controversy which followed the restoration of licensing. He was a candidate for the Invercargill City Council at the last municipal elections. Until recently he was an executive officer of the Southland Printing and Related Trades Union.
The appointment of Dr V. J. Chapman, M.A., Ph.D., to the Chair of Botany at the Auckland University College, following the death of Professor T. L. Lancaster, has been made by the College Council, and advice of Dr Chapman’s acceptance has been received. Dr Chapman is at present serving in the forces in the South-East Asia Command. He is aged 35. Dr Chapman graduated B.A. (Cantab) in 1932, Ph.D. (Cantab) in 1935, and M.A. (Cantab) in the following year.—P.A.
