DENIAL OF ALLEGED BRIBERY SYSTEM
Rationing Inspectors Not Instructed (Special) WELLINGTON, Nov. 21. A return tabled in the House of Representatives today on the motion of Mr A. J. Murdoch (Nat., Marsden) states that no Ministerial or departmental instructions were supplied to rationing inspectors in relation to the alleged bribery system. No such system had ever existed. The acceptance of bribes, whether for payment into the Public Account of otherwise, was definitely contrary to the policy of the Rationing Controller and of the Public Service generally. The return, which was supplied at the request of Mr A. S. Sutherland (Nat., Hauraki) shows that there were 18 rationing inspectors employed at the end of September. Four were transferred from other departments, six had practical experience in the grocery trade, seven had executive experience in miscellaneous businesses, and one was a farmer.
