TUIS ADVANCES IN FAVOUR

Great Coon’s Return To Form TOWN TALeT BACK AT MATAURA

Acceptances for the rorbury Park meeting are due on Friday. Engagement Continued Douglas Haig’s New Zealand Derby engagement has been continued and the Paper Slipper colt is apparently none the worse for his experience on Saturday. Stud Item Nell Grattan has produced a bay filly by Springfield Globe and has been mated with Light Brigade.

Proving Expensive Notus continues to prove expensive and again at Invercargill he wrecked a good winning chance by a slow beginning.

Improved Showing Caudray was responsible for a creditable showing to be second to Jolly Biddy, and the recent racing he has had has improved the Dillon Hall ing. Will Go Far

To win in her initial appearance was a creditable effort on the part of Grattan Drive, which finished on very gamely in a punishing finish. By Grattan Loyal she is out of a mare by Sungod, and promises to show up in better company than she was opposed to on Saturday. At one stage of the running Grattan Drive was almost hopelessly out of it and on the strength of this form one may wonder just how good the Grattan Loyal mare really is. Royal Lancer , n . . . 'Royal Lancer was last to finish in the Southland Cup. He was up with his field in behind the leaders in the early running, but over the last half-mile he was struggling to hold his position. His prospects of staging a comeback do not look particularly bright.

Had Every Chance There was solid support to say that Foxchase would win the Southland Cup, and after racing up to be third behind the *two leaders at the home turn he could make little impression on them from then on. The race is likely to improve the Foxbridge gelding, which stripped well.

Cup Riders Riding engagements for the New Zealand Victory Cup are: K. Nuttall, Authentic; A. Messervy, Chung Cnong; C Stokes, Piccolo; M. Edwards; Sir Bian; H. N. Wiggins, Signal Officer; T, J. Ellis, Golden Souvenir; D. J. Thistoll, Palfrey; C. McDonald, Miss Medley; V. Sellars, Langue d’Or; E. V Dye, Sing Sing.

Prince Rupert Prince Rupert, an elder brother to a recent winner in Master Robert, put up his best showing to date when he just failed to lead all the way in the second division of the Waverley Trot. The Quite Sure gelding hung on gamely in a close finish and he may not be long in improving on this placing. Town Talk Returns The Dillon Hall filly, Town Talk, returned to Southland last week and she is to be given a spell before being prepared for the Wyndham Juvenile Stakes next March. Her third to Sprayman and Doctor Ted in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes stamped her as an outstanding youngster and although she failed in the later classics, there appears good reason for the high opinion held of her. John Gay’s Effort There was solid support to say that John Gay would beat the open sprinters on Saturday, but he had every chance and finished a moderate fourth. Both Lyndal and Lisheen which finished in front of him gave him a start of several lengths into the straight, but at the same time John Gay was conceding both of them practically two stone. The race is certain to improve the Theio gelding. Likely Favourite , Tuis, a Stewards’ Handicap candidate, was a winner on Saturday. She will be ridden at Riccarton by W. J. Broughton, who has piloted the last two winners of the Riccarton sprint. Tuis is a four-year-old gelding by Revelation from Min Lu (the dam of Bridgehead), by King Lu from Elnona, by Elysian from Wenona, by Spalpeen and tracing back to Stepfeldt, by Nordenfeldt. Tuis promises to start as favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday. Not Out Of Turn Wantwood’s novice success was not out of turn as the Salmagundi three-year-old was placed at Gore on Boxing Day after being entangled with the barrier strands. He has several engagements at the New Zealand Cup meeting and he is one which can be expected to hold his own against the better company he will meet. Wantwood is a grand type of juvenile and although he has had little racing so far there has been some style about his efforts.

Riverton Trio Loyal Lady, Naughty Lady and Faithful .Pal left Riverton on Monday en route to Riccarton where they have engagements at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Loyal Lady’s form in the hack sprint at the Southland meeting,

when she was confidently expectedto run well, was disappointing. The Man’s Pal filly was right up with the leaders at the home turn where she began to drop out and finished well back. She will be tackling even stronger company at Riccarton, but in her best form she will not be out of it. Faithful Pal has trained on since his Winton success and the Man’s Pal two-year-old will be an interesting Welcome Stakes candidate.. Naughty Lady is down to contest two-year-old events at the meeting and the Haughty Winner filly has done well since she raced at Winton.

Great Coon’s Return Great Coon showed a return to his best form when he beat the open milers on Saturday. He was ridden a very patient race by the apprentice B. J. Langford, who had him up in a handy position throughout and although he appeared to be crowded at the home turn, Langford kept Great Coon on the rails. Inside the distance he put in his claim and he came on to win with something in hand. Great Coon was racing over his favourite distance and his effort was characteristic of his best form.

Staying At Home J. A. Rowland was dissatisfied with the weighting of Great Coon and Sunny Course at Riccarton and this was the reason for the withdrawal of the pair for all engagements. Sea Power was not himself at the weekend after racing at the Southland meeting and it was believed that he was suffering from kidney trouble. _ Sea Power failed to get |he jump out in the hack sprint and from then on had little chance. The Hazlett trio, Aurora Australis, Lisheen and Black Light did not race up to expectations at the Southland meeting and their engagements at the Cup meeting were not continued.

For Riccarton T. E. Pankhurst left on Monday with Siglow and Red Prize, both of which are down to appear at Riccarton on Saturday. Red Prize has been racing with marked consistency and in his last four starts he has been placed on each occasion. At Gore he was second to both Prize Ring and Sea Power; he beat all but Douglas Haig over nine furlongs at Winton and at Invercargill on Saturday in his first appearance in open company he finished third to Great Coon and Aurora Australis. Red Prize has thrived on the racing he has had and he will be a decided hack prospect at ■ Riccarton. Siglow’s mission will be the hurdle events. He schooled well before he left and the recent racing he has had has tuned him up. At the top of his form Siglow was a high class hurdler. Wantwood’s Riccarton engagements' were not continued.
