REHABILITATION EXPENDITURE
ALMOST £12,900,000 AUTHORIZED
The total overall authorization for rehabilitation purposes in New Zealand amounted to £11,952,847 up to August 31, says a statement from the Rehabilitation Department. By far the most of this—£lo,3B6,s4B—- — for loans for farms, houses, businesses, furniture and tools of trade. The remainder was for the cost of. various forms of training and education and for special grants and allowances. The amount authorized for the board’s trade training centres as at August 31 was £489,992, and for other forms of trade training the total was £285,754. This included subsidies to private firms employing former servicemen under the board’s training schemes. The amount involved for farm training was £72,221, education £117,391 (both of these from April, 1944) for blinded former servicemen £10,281, and grants to the Disabled Servicemen’s Re-estab-lishment League £52,000. The amount so far expended on rehabilitation allowances was £510,900. These were intended to cover the time between discharge from the services and the resumption of employment and were not paid for more than 13 weeks. Special grants totalled £12,775 until the end of August, while’ grants for travelling expenses and removals amounted to £7956. Included in the total was £153,680, being financial assistance authorized to Maori former servicemen. There was also a further £2,814,002 authorized for the purchase and development by the Crown of lands for the settlement of former servicemen farmers.
