LORNE-RIVERTON HIGHWAY

NEED FOR IMPROVING ROAD RECOGNIZED “The board appreciates the desirability of improving and completing the sealing of the Lome-Riverton State highway, and the necessary survey has been completed for the whole length. However, it 'is not possible to carry out the sealing work until certain reconstruction and bridge renewal work has been completed, and unfortunately it has not been possible to provide for much of the required work this year,” states a letter which Mr J. S. Dick, secretary of the Southland Progress League, has received from the Main Highways Board, Wellington. The letter, which is in reply to one from the league urging that the sealing of the Lorne-Riverton highway be completed, adds:—“Provision has been made for the renewal of two small bridges, including one of those complained of in your letter, and also for the renewal of the Makarewa stream bridge and consequent deviation. The board will endeavour to improve this highway as funds are made available.” The letter also states that the total gravel length of the highway is seven miles 18 chains, and the total sealed length is 10 miles 52 chains.
