BORSTAL ESCAPEE IN COURT

Sentenced To Another Year In Prison Gilbert Higham, aged 18, appeared before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of escaping from the Borstal Institution. He was also charged with stealing at Wright’s Bush an overcoat and jacket, of a total value ot £B, the property of Ivan Marcus Ayers. Senior Detective R. Thompson said that the accused had been, sentenced at Napier in August to a term in the Borstal on five charges of converting cars to his own use. He had escaped from the Borstal farm on Tuesday, being recaptured at Riverton the following day. On his way to Riverton he had stolen the clothing. The accused was convicted and sentenced to one year’s imprisonment on the first charge, the sentence to be cumulative with his present sentence, on the charge of escaping. On the second charge he was convicted and discharged, an order being made for the return of the clothing. Robert John Hendry appeared on remand on a charge of breaking and entering the premises of Gormack, Wilkes, Davidson, Ltd., at Gore, and committing theft. A request that the accused be remanded to appear at Gore on October 15 was granted. Senior Detective Thompson stated that the case would be disposed of that day.
