STEAD CUP GOLF TOURNAMENT

MRS ROBINSON WINS FINAL After an interval of seven years Mrs D. W. Robinson (Queen’s Park) is again the holder of the Stead Cup. In the final of this annual women’s golf tournament at Queen’s Park yesterday she beat Mrs D. Lee (Nightcaps) by the comfortable margin of 4 and 3. The Sports Trust Cup, which is competed for by B grade players, was won by Mrs A. G. Gifford, (Queen’s Park), who overwhelmed Mrs A Hain (Gore) and won by 8 and 6. Mrs Gifford was runner-up in the final a few years ago. The weather, which had been fine and sunny for the first two days, changed yesterday and became colder and showery. But that made little difference to the size of the field in the foursomes played in the afternoon. The tournament was efficiently conducted, one noticeable improvement being a reduction in the number of starting places to two. After the day’s play yesterday the prizes won during the tournament were presented by Mrs D. W. Stalker, president of the Queens Park Ladies’ Golf Club. Several visiting players also spoke. STEAD CUP FINAL The standard of golf in the Stead cup final was below expectations. Mrs Lee won the first hole with a 5, but lost the short second to her opponents 4. Sixes halved Renown, where neither could get down in two putts, then Mrs Robinson took the lead when she got down in one putt at Elies Road. But she promptly lost it again at the fifth, where Mrs Lee had a 5. Each had. three putts at the next hole, which was halved in 6’s. Mrs Lee held an advantage when they reached the seventh green and holed out in 6 to become 1 up. Cosy was halved in 6’s and the next should have been likewise halved, but Mrs Lee took three putts and the match was square. • Mrs Robinson now began to reveal her true form. She won the tenth with a bogey 4, and after the eleventh had been halved in 4’s she became 2 up with a birdie 2 at the twelfth. She won Tipperary with a 6, and the fourteenth was halved in 6’s. Mrs Lee had a chance of keeping the match alive when Mrs Robinson found a bunker with her fourth at the fifteenth,. but she took three putts. Mrs Robinson recovered well and got down in one putt to win the hole and the match. SPORTS TRUST CUP In the Sports Trust Cup final Mrs Hain failed to win a hole. The first was halved, then Mrs Gifford won five in a row, her figures being better than those in the Stead Cup final. She also won the eighth and stood 6 up at the turn. She made it 7 up at the tenth and 8 up at the short twelfth. The best cards returned in a bogey match yesterday morning were: —Senior, Mrs A. D. Reid (Gore), 7 down; Mrs A. E. Smith, 10 down. Junior: Mi’s M. Webb, 7 down; Mrs O. H. Paton, 7 down; Mrs W. H. Gregory, 8 down; Mrs L. W. Barrett, 8 down. Miss Webb won on the count back. Medal foursomes, played over 13 holes, resulted as follows: Mesdames R. Gilmour and J. L. Orr, 79-20-59; Mrs O. H. Paton and Miss S. King (Winton), 79-20-59; Mesdames D. Lee and R. Malcolm (Nightcaps), 74-13-61; Mrs H. Halligan and Miss M. Webb, 80-18-62. Mesdames Gilmour and Orr won on the count back. INVERCARGILL CLUB The Invercargill Golf Club’s links at Otatara, which have been closed while ! lambing was in progress, will be re- ■ opened tomorrow, when a bogey match will be played.
