DUNDEE SANDY’S CHANCE

BIG FIELDS AT NEW BRIGHTON (Special). CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 4. The New Brighton Trotting Club s meeting to be held on Saturday has attracted good fields of evenly-rated horses. Although the champion pacers are not engaged the class is generally good and the fields include a number of horses well on their way to the highest grades. The Maiden Handicap has attracted a very big field and will probably have to be run in divisions. On this race the totalizator will not be opened. The following horses may race prominently: 11.30 a.m.: INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP—Bancor, Rival Chief, Mamanuas.

12.10 p.m.: IMPROVERS’ HANDICAP —Volo Victory, Loyal Chief, Chinook. 12.55 p.m.: SPRING HANDICAP— Cameronian, Lucky Loyal, Scottish Lady. 1.40 p.m.: PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP —Dundee Sandy, Nightbeam, Scott Axworthy.

The following horses will be bracketed on the totalizator: Introductory Handicap—Calumella and Bancor; Improvers’ Handicap—Bien Sur and Real Grattan, Gay Pal and Dillondale, Knapdale Lass and Sunny Glen; Spring Handicap—Punctual and Scottish Lady, Zingarrie and Turco; President’s Handicap —Night Beam and Parrish Lad, Loyal King and Joan Conquest; Stewards Handicap—Firewater and Jock McGrath; Avon Handicap—Atawhero, Margaret Hall and Gamble King; Sir Carol and Gamester; Farewell Handicap —Night Beam, Parrish Lad and Clockwork, Worthy Cross and Special Edition. WINGATUI TRACK WORK Weld Cona Looks Well (Special) DUNEDIN, October 4. Although there was nothing sensational about the final gallops at Wingatui this morning for the Dunedin meeting. Some of the times recorded were the best to date, excepting those on the sand tracks, which have not recovered from Monday’s rain. The most attractive effort was that of Whackie over five furlongs. He had Ring Chief for a mate, but he was not in a galloping mood and Whackie strode away at the finish, the time being 1.6. This and the following gallops took place on the inside grass which provided firm going. Douglas Haig was much too good for Kiltie and Rubble over six furlongs run in 1.22 3-5. Douglas Haig was held back to his mates at the finish. His mission on Saturday will probably be the Novice Handicap, in which his rider will be G. Hampton. Tenor Royal shaped better than he has been doing to run five furlongs with Alamode in 1.8 4-5. LOCH DERG PLEASES

Loch Derg led Boolamskee at the end of six furlongs in 1.25 3-5. Falconbridge and Competitor went five furlongs in 1.10. Falconbridge was not allowed to do his best. . Siegform led Dark Warrior and Brockie over half a mile in 54sec. Knight Crusader and Robert recorded 1.9 4-5 for five furlongs. Signal Officer was travelling under a hold when concluding a mile with Siglow and Sascha, the last five in 1.13 1-5. . .

Turnstile finished ahead of Western Front at the finish of six furlongs in 1.25 4-5. Red Prize, Foxhaven, Boloyna, Courtdress, Bonny Flight and Loyal Lady were among others worked in the grass. Boloyna and Bonny Flight look particularly well. On the sand Royal Chance and Lance Wing went three furlongs well within themselves in 39sec. On the same track Sir Tague and Twelve Pointer ran half a mile in 55sec. WELD CONA’S TASK

Weld Cona, who looks a picture, cantered once round on the course proper next to the rails. Some two-year-olds were sprinted. String Band and Winning Cheer ran two in 25sec; Special Flight three in 38 4-ssec and Regular and a Man’s Pal filly three in 39sec. Considering the slow nature of the going these were good times. Majestic Fox led Diarma and Victory Star, but they were not allowed to extend themselves. The only jumping seen this morning was a school over two flights of hurdles by Sir Saladin (Hillis) and Forage (Dawson). Sir Saladin shaped well, but Forage screwed at each obstacle. Yesterday Siglow and Silver Sash and Robert and Kohara, in pairs as named, jumped four hurdles satisfactorily. J. A. Rowland considered Sunny Course was not ready for two races and he sent him home. The course proper will need all the sunshine possible to be firm on Saturday. The weather is unsettled at present. . Brackets are: Novice Handicap— Superlative and Eudora, Victory, Flight and Waiau King; Dunedin Guineas — Swingalong and Armont; Clarendon Handicap—Sea Power and Red Prize.

CYCLING HANDICAPS The third of the four races to Bluff will be conducted by the Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club tomorrow. The race will start at the comer of Clyde and Tweed streets at 3 p.m. The following handicaps have been declared: R. Harrington, A. Padget, E. Kidd, L. Cameron (smin. 30sec); M. Wills, W. Matheson, G. Hewton (4.15); J. Ferguson, L. Grossi, A. Henderson (3.15); R. Smith, R. O’Connor, G. Young, C. Matheson (2.30); A. Dawson, W. Young, L. Tall, M. Winter (2nun.); K. McDonald (1.30); M.
