Canadian and English brides who have been in the Dominion for some time are quickly settling down in their new homeland. Most of them are happy and find New Zealanders friendly and kind. Naturally, all are homesick at times. There are worries, of course, housing being chief among them. The British wives find the abundance of food incredible and wish they could send some of it to their own people. The Canadians miss central heating, washing machines, refrigerators and tinned foods, though they like the plentiful supplies of fresh food and fish. It may be said that the majority of these girls New Zealand boys have chosen are charming, frank and eager to adapt themselves to their new life.

A function, the type of which is unique in Southland and possibly in New Zealand, will take place at Mataura tonight, when 16 the daughters of returned servicemen, will be presented to Mr T. L. Macdonald, M.P., and Mrs Macdonald. The member for Mataura is himself a returned serviceman. Among those who will also be present will be the president of the Mataura sub-branch of the Gore R.S.A. (Mr V. H. Ball) and Mrs Ball, and the president of the Gore association (Mr F. M. Murray) and Mrs Murray. ENGAGEMENT The engagement is announced of Olive j Cathleen Martin, of 116 Nelson Street, to Sidney Rapley, of Invercargill.
