INADEQUATE RAILWAY TRUCKS

Southland Lime Delivery Affected (Special) WELLINGTON, October 4. The serious position existing in Southland, due to the shortage of railway trucks for the conveyance of lime to farmers, was referred to by Mr G. R. Herron (Nat., Awarua), in notice of a question to the Minister of Railways (Mr Semple) in the House of Representatives today. Mr Herron, who asked the Minister to have an inquiry made, said a system of rationing lime was brought in about two years ago, to allow all farmers to get a fair share of the lime produced. This was now breaking down owing to the need for more trucks to deliver the lime. Many of the lime companies were requesting farmers near the works to cart away all the lime they could, so as to enable the works to keep producing, while other farmers, who had to rely upon the delivery of lime by rail, could not get their supplies.
