St. Mary’s Bridge Circle held its final night for the season in St. Mary’s Hall on Tuesday, when Mesdames J. Holloway and O. Fogarty were the hostesses. Mrs A. V. Crombie, the president, thanked those who had attended during the season, and congratulated the committee on its work. She presented bouquets to Mesdames Holloway, A. Robertson, J. Moylan, Fogarty, and Misses E. Lyons, and M. Grace. There were 21 tables in play and prizes were won by Miss D. Deegan (contract), Mrs R. B. Williams (auction), Mr T. Scully (500), and Mrs J. McGoldrick (hidden number). A pleasant function took place at H. and J. Smith’s tea-rooms yesterday morning, when members of the Plunket committee entertained Mrs T. F. Gilkison and Mrs A. Derbie, two vice-presi-dents, who have recently resigned from the committee, at morning tea. A spray of flowers was presented to each guest. Mrs L. C. Smith, president, in expressing regret at the resignation of Mrs Gilkison and Mrs Derbie, said what splendid service they had given the Plunket Society over a long period of years. The Mayoress, Mrs A. Wachner, and Mrs James Robertson, vice-presi-dent, also spoke. The addition of embroidery-roses, butterflies, or lace—to undergarments of the wives of repatriated officers to give them glamour in the eyes of their husbands, was mentioned in the prosecution in a London police court of Mrs Pinto Liete, who was fined £55, with 12 guineas costs, for making women’s garments in contravention of the austerity style regulations. The defendant had added 14 buttons on a dress when the limit was 5 buttons, and had added silk facings or trimmings to overcoats. To show how exclusive the defendant’s trade was, it was stated that she charged 8J- guineas for a nightdress, 23 guineas for dresses, and 8J guineas for slips. The magistrate said he had been told many strange things in his court, but he found it difficult to believe that a repatriated officer would not be glad to see his wife unless she had butterflies on her cami-knickers! ENGAGEMENT Mr and Mrs G. K. Knox, Wright’s Bush, wish to announce the engagement of their daughter, Isla, to Arnold, youngest son of Mr and Mrs H. Jones, Morton Street.
