FRIENDS FOR LONELY SOLDIER

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, October 3. The former prisoner of war, Private Anthony Hogan, who found he had not a single civilian friend or relation when he returned from overseas on Monday, today has at least 50 potential friends all anxious to help him. Moreover, he has had the offer of a good job in a boot factory. Almost as soon as the story telling of Private Hogan’s plight was published yesterday offers of friendship were received at the newspaper office and at the office of the Army officer who befriended him. Several of those who telephoned were bereaved mothers who had lost a son in Private Hogan’s old battalion. This morning Private Hogan was busy making a round of calls on those offering him friendship and accommodation.
