STOCK SALE AT BURNSIDE

KEEN COMPETITION IN ALL CLASSES (P.A.) DUNEDIN, October 3. There was a keen auction at Burnside, fat sheep in particular experiencing ready competition; rates compared with last week’s price advancing fully 3/- a head. At the opening of the fat cattle sale there was an improvement on the returns of last week, but towards the end values slipped by fully 30/- a head on the opening rates. Extra prime bullocks to £3l/7/6, prime £24/17/6 to £2B/17/6, medium. £lB/12/6 to £2O/2/6, light from £l5 12/6. Prime heifers from £l3/12/6 to £l4/7/6, medium £lO/12/6 to £l2 17/6, light from £B/12/6. Extra prime cows to £l6/7/6, prime £ll/12/6 to £l3/17/6, medium £B/12/6. The number of cattle entered for the sale was 260.

There was not as many fat sheep penned as last week, about 1900 being entered. The quality did not reach the same standard as recent yardings, but all classes offered experienced keen competition. One outstanding truck of wethers brought from 70/- to 74/-, an average of 72/-. Extra prime wethers to 74/-, prime 58/- to 66/-, medium 48/6 to 52/-, light from 39/-. Prime young ewes to 56/-. Extra prime ewes to 53/-, prime 44/6 to 49/-, medium 38/- to 41/-, light from 32/-. Eighteen spring lambs were up for sale, and prices ranged from 36/6 to 46/6.

The yarding of store cattle was again fairly large, and there was a good attendance of buyers. All classes were readily sold. Three to three and a-haif year old steers from £l2/10/- to £l4 10/-, two to two and a-half year olds £9/17- to £lO/5/-, yearlings from £5 17/-. Runners also experienced lively competition, selling from £9/15/- to £l2.

The entry of baconers was again small, and as a result prices were high. Choppers from £9/15/- to £l3/2/6. Extra prime baconers £B/15/- to £9 6/-, prime £7/7/- to £7/18/-, medium £5/7/6 to £6/5/-, light from £4/15/-. The inquiry for store pigs was keen, large stores selling from £2/16/- to £3 7/-. Best weaners sold from 33/- to 38/-.
