(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, October 3. The Ashton-Under-Lyne by-election resulted as follows: H. Rhodes (Labour) 12,889 Sir Robert Cary (Conservative) 8360 Squadron Leader A. Beale (Lib.) 2604 Labour Majority 4529

The vacancy was due to the elevation of Sir William Jowitt to the Peerage on his appointment as Lord Chancellor. The Smethwick by-election resulted: Gordon Walker (Labour) 19,364 G. H. Edgar (Conservative) 8762 The by-election was held to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr A. J. Dobbs (Labour), who was killed in a motor accident after the general election.
