When W. J. Broughton won on Royal Heir at Trentham and on Reorapa at Awapuni he brought his grand total to 764. Thus spread over his 17 seasons in the saddle he has averaged just on 45 a season. They are great figures which would have been even better had not war restrictions controlled racing over the last four seasons. During his peak period betwen 1937 and . 1941 he averaged 66.4 wins for the five years. Still comparatively young, he seems assured of topping the 1000 mark in the early postwar years.
