GROWING TENSION IN TEHERAN
Russian Actions Cause Concern
(Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, July 31. Real and growing tension in Teheran is reported by the correspondent of The Daily Mail in a dispatch from Cairo. Queer things have been happening which have badly scared the Persians. There are three reasons for the uneasiness. They are:— (1) British and Russian censorship in Teheran. Britain, though still at war, does not use it except for purely military matters, but the Russians, who are not at war, use the censorship rigorously against British and American correspondents on a political basis. (2) Persia requested the Allies to withdraw their troops from her territory. Britain, although having vital oil interests in the south, offered to consider the Persian proposals sympathetically, but Russia has not replied at all. (3) Supplies to Russia via Iran. Britain handed back her section of the railway to the Persians, but the Russians are hanging on to their section, although they have no use for it.
Clarification is needed of the Red Army’s reluctance to quit north Persia. . The Persian Army is prevented from going up to that sealed off area to quell disturbances.
