Returned Servicemen Want = Opportunities One of the needs of the time is to give our returned servicemen the opportunity to succeed in the work or business of their choice, and to offer them a goodly share of the freedom they have been fighting for. They want to throw off the regimentation of military life—and they do not wish to run into the same sort of regimentation back home. They want to set out in their own way to make a new life, and to use their heads and hands in the fashioning of their destiny. A job and an opportunity—that is what the real New Zealander wants, and what New Zealand free enterprise can provide if it is given a chance to expand and progress without undue State regulation and interference. Free enterprise provides jobs—and also opportunities for people of skill and initiative. A leading business man, Mr P. Coyle, of Wellington, said recently: “Private enterprise creates competition and competition, notwithstanding its faults, certainly results in concentration of thought and energy that would not otherwise be brought into play, and has proved a means of reducing costs and bringing goods to markets at lower prices than would have been available to the consuming public. It therefore is the duty of the State to remove all restrictions on materials and labour in order that private enterprise may play its part in producing goods at reasonable prices to meet the needs of the community.” The purchase of the Bank of New Zealand by the State will be a blow at free enterprise, and give the State an additional stranglehold on all business.
