HIGH RAINFALL AND FROSTS

WEATHER IN JULY A rainfall above the average and many frosts were experienced in Invercargill during July. There was a good deal of dull, calm weather. Few high winds were experienced. The lowest maximum temperature was 39 degrees on July 25, but during the month the temperature hovered mainly between 46 and 50 degrees. Frost was recorded on 20 days; on eight days more than 10 degrees were recorded. , The sharpest frost was on July 4, wlien 13 degrees were recorded. In July last year 19 frosts were experienced, the sharpest being 14 degrees. The total rainfall for the month was 4.19 inches, compared with an average taken over a number of years of 3.38 inches. Rain fell on 18 days of the month, and .80 inches, the heaviest fall was recorded on July 9. The total rainfall for the first seven months of the year is 28.90 inches, compared with 19.42 inches for the first seven months of 1944.

Ninety hours of bright sunshine were recorded during the month. This is quite a good total for a winter month, and compares favourably with the figures for July of last year, when 90 hours were also recorded. In July 1943 the sun shone for 127 hours. There were only six days in the month on which no sunshine was recorded, but on many of the other days the periods of sunshine were short. The longest period of sunshine for one day was 6 hours 12 minutes on July 23. A fall of snow occurred on the 14th day of the month, the fall being the heaviest experienced in Invercargill for some years.
