CHARTER RATIFIED BY U.S. SENATE

(Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 29. The Senate ratified the United Nations’ Charter by 89 votes to 2, the Republicans, Senator William Langer and Senator Hendrik Shipstead opposing it. Fifty-three Democrats and 35 Republicans and Senator Robert M. La Follette (Progressive) affirmed it. The White House has released a statement by President Truman saying that it is deeply gratifying that the Senate ratified the Charter by a virtually unanimous vote. The Senate’s action substantially advanced the cause of world peace.
