MONEY FOR RED CROSS ACTIVITIES
Amounts Not Drawn From Patriotic Funds
“It has come to the knowledge of our executive that from time to time statements are being made by representatives on patriotic zone committees to the effect that it is not imperative for Red Cross branches to collect and hold funds for their own activities,” stated a letter from the secretary of the Southland Red Cross Society received at a meeting of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council yesterday.
Some members who were not conversant with the constitution of the Red Cross Society apparently did not understand that while Red Cross members were giving their whole-hearted support to the collections for sick and wounded and in a year collected more for this purpose than for their own needs, the society, like any other organization, must be self-supporting, stated the letter. It could not receive moneys from the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council.
Mr W. F. Sturman said that in the early part of the war the Red Cross had collected for its own requirements. Then it had worked for the patriotic council collecting for sick and wounded, the same as was being done at the present time. It must have been said by some patriotic committee members that if the Red Cross wanted money it could get that money from patriotic funds. The council could not give the Red Cross money for its domestic requirements.
