INVERCARGILL GOLF TITLES

G. E. GLENNIE WINS SENIOR Playing at the top of his form, G. E. Glennie won the Invercargill golf championship at Queen’s Park yesterday. With 78 in the morning he was three strokes ahead of the next competitor. He played even better, golf in the afternoon, taking 37 for each half and 74, only two over the standard scratch score, for the round. This gave him an aggregate of 152, five strokes clear of the runner-up. The holder of the title, G. A. Patterson, took 82 in the morning, but turned in a fine 75 after lunch. Winton’s leading player, E. O. Heney, was also below form in the morning, but revealed his true form in the afternoon, when he carded an excellent 76. The intermediate title was won by V. S. Milne (Wyndham), who had two strokes to spare from R. T. Barnett and a club-mate, W. Irvine. The two latter played off for the runner-up trophy, Barnett being the winner. A. J. Rae (Tuatapere) and C. W. Francis tied with 177 in the junior championship, 1 and a play-off on a sudden death basis was won by Francis. Only one hole was necessary, Francis being conceded a bogey 4. The standard of golf among the juniors was well up to that in the intermediate grade; in fact the totals returned by Francis and Rae were beaten by only one intermediate player. Nearly 100 players took part in the tournament. Conditions in the morning' were difficult, the greens being hard after a frost of seven degrees. Approaching and putting was therefore a chancy business, and it was round the greens that strokes were dropped in the morning. After lunch conditions were ideal.

The weather throughout the tournament, which began on Saturday, was fine and mild, and there was an absence of wind. As usual the Queen’s Park officials made a first-class job of conducting the tournament, which was carried through without a hitch. At the close of play yesterday the trophies won during the three days were presented by Mr J. G. Imlay, president of the Queen’s Park Golf Club. Following are the results of yesterday’s play, the players being members of the Queen’s Park Club where no club is mentioned:—
