Mrs Hugh Carswell, Dunedin, is staying with her mother, Mrs V. A. Mehaffey, Grey street.

Mrs W. W. Mackie, Tapanui, who has been visiting Mrs J. D. Robertson, Earnslaw street, returned home yesterday.

Mrs Howard Sutton, Moa Flat, arrives today to be the guest of her mother, Mrs B. C. Basstian, Tweed street.

Fourth Officer E. M. Morrison, of the W.R.N.S., is spending leave with her •parents, Mr and Mrs H. Morrison, Janet street.

Miss Edna Waterson, Yarrow street, who has been appointed to a secretarial position on the staff of the London Book Club, Wellington, leaves for the north today. Miss G. J. Batchelor, M.A., Dip. Ed., who is at present a teacher at the Christchurch Girls’ High School, has been appointed lecturer in English at the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College. The Royal School of Music (London) Scholarship has been awarded to a former Auckland girl, Miss Nyria de Jongh, daughter of Mr and Mrs A. de Jongh, now of Tasmania. Miss de Jongh, who was born at Matamata, New Zealand, has been studying in Melbourne since the beginning of the year, after winning a scholarship awarded by the University of Tasmania for the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Soon after her arrival in Melbourne she won the Ormond Exhibition. In 1943 she won the junior and grand championships in the Launceston competitions and in 1944 she gained the joint Licentiate of Music awarded by the Australian Music Examinations Board and Associated Board.
