DARING ESCAPE BY GERMANS
Journey From France To Eire LONDON, June 3. Armed patrols along 180 miles of the Ulster-Eire border have been strengthened as a result of the revelation of an astonishing story of four German prisoners who escaped from a prisoner of war cage in France and travelled undetected through England, Scotland and Ulster to Eire, says The Daily Express. The Germans, all of whom spoke English with an American accent, stole American uniforms, obtained forged leave papers and crossed the English Channel in a vessel. Using more forged documents, they passed through England and Scotland to Belfast where they obtained civilian clothes and finished their 700-mile journey to Dublin by train. Security officers are now making a double check on the three BelfastDublin trains which halt at the border for a Customs Examination. One official said: “If four German privates could do this there is every chance of German higher-ups trying the same trick.”
Disciplinary action has been taken against those concerned in the Germans’ escape from France.
