DOMINION’S AID FOR UNRRA

WAR SURPLUSES USED FOR RELIEF (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 4. The chief sunply and requirements officer of UNRRA in the South West Pacific area, Dr W. B. Sutch, who is at present visiting New Zealand, had discussions today with the acting Prime Minister, Mr Nash, on policy questions relating to UNRRA activities. In particular, probable purchases by UNRRA in New Zealand were explored. Dr Sutch said tonight it was intended that New Zealand’s contribution to UNRRA for the relief and rehabilitation of areas liberated from the enemy would be given in New Zealand goods up to the value of £2,340,000. It was possible that part of New Zealand’s contribution might be in wool. Already, UNRRA had used part of New Zealand’s contribution in procuring over 230,000 items of New Zealand clothing and used footwear from the War Assets Realization Board through the Ministry of Supply. In this way, war supplies were being used for peace. ■ Dr Sutch added that New Zealand had already sent a shipload of food and other relief materials to Greece, which had been very helpful at a crucial time. This was ini addition to her contribution to UNRRA.
