WORK IN SOUTHLAND COUNTY

More Than 2230 Miles Of Gravelled Roads

“According to the information given by the engineer in his annual report the mileage of gravelled roads in the county now stands at 2239.8 miles and the length of formed roads now stands at 289.41 miles. These mileages include State and main highways, as well as county roads,” said the chairman (Mr G. W. Whittingham) in his report to the annual meeting of the Southland County Council yesterday. During the the council had formed 8.15 miles of new roads and had completed the metalling of 16.95 miles of new roads, Mr Whittingham said. The council had been able to undertake this programme, using the trucks which it had lately purchased. The acquisition of these vehicles had been a good business move by the council. It now had mobile units which were available for work in any part of the council’s area. The output of crushed gravel had been 63.872 cubic yards. This was slightly in excess of last year’s total. They had been held up with the crushing plant because parts were not available.
