WOODEN BRIDGES IN COUNTY

SOME NEARING END OF ECONOMIC LIFE The Southland County Council has approximately 600 wooden bridges in its territory which have a span of more than 20ft, according to a statement made by the chairman (Mr G. W. Whittingham) in his report to the annual meeting of the council yesterday. Some of these bridges were nearing the end of their economic life, Mr Whittingham said, and the council had been wise in establishing a bridges and culverts renewal account. The credit of this account stood at £12,492 and the whole of this credit would He wanted in the postwar period for the renewal of some of the older bridges. The council would be able to embark on a construction programme of some magnitude without having to incur loan debts to finance its operations. The credit balance in the plant renewal fund and the amount in the bridges and culverts renewal account had been invested in national war savings and in war loan stock on shortterm investments, so that the fund would be readily available for use by the council in its' postwar operations.
