BOWLS CONTROL IN N.Z.

CONSTITUTION OF COUNCIL (PA.) WELLINGTON, May 23. That a letter be sent to the secretary of the New Zealand Bowling Council advising that the Wellington Bowling Centre was in favour of the constitution of the council being amended, was the decision of the meeting of the centre last night. The suggestion is that the constitution be amended to provide for each centre being represented on the council by one delegate, with the exception of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin, which should be entitled to two delegates, each delegate to have one vote. Mr Gilbert said that when the bowling associations of the two islands amalgamated in 1913 it was decided that each island be represented by seven councillors. The number of bowlers in the North Island had almost doubled that of the south. The North Island had every right to have more councillors than the south. There had to be a change. He said it was a ridiculous state of affairs when bowlers in Wellington were compelled to vote a man to the council who might come from north Auckland and about whom Wellington men knew very little, if anything.

COUNCIL OF SPORT Athletics And Rugby Not Represented (PA.) WELLINGTON, May 23. “It seems strange that athletics and Rugby, the two sports with which I have been associated and for which I have worked so hard, are those I have been unable to persuade to join the fold,” said the newly-elected president of the New Zealand Council of Sport, Mr A. C. Kitto, at the annual meeting today. After referring to the Wellington Rugby Union’s association with the council and the refusal of the president of the New Zealand Union to accept a motion regarding the council at its last conference, Mr Kitto said: “Certain men at the head of affairs won’t always be there, and I think a change is coming shortly.” The following officers were elected: Patron, Dr H. Pettit; president, Mr A. C. Kitto; vice-presidents, Mrs H. D. Muir and Mr A. Marshall; management committee, Misses M. Armstrong and M. Wilkins and Messrs W. A. Baker, H. N. Ballinger, W. J. Griffin, J. Meltzer, D. T. Woodfield and J. H. Phillips; secretary and treasurer, Mr K. A. Falconer. AUSTRALIA WINS VICTORY TEST England Defeated By Six Wickets (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, May 22. Australia defeated England in the victory test match by six wickets. A crowd of 8000 saw the final day’s play. The wicket was easy and unsuitable for the spin bowlers, but Australia’s spinners, Pepper and Ellis, troubled the English' batsmen throughout. Hammond and Robertson batted confidently and aggressively, and the remainder played a defensive game. Edrich was very sedate. Australia had 70 minutes in which to score 106 runs. They started disastrously, losing two wickets for 11 runs, but Hassett and Pepper saved the side. Pepper, a burly New South Wales player, gave a magnificent display of free hitting and thrilled the crowd, which cheered a lusty hit into the grandstand for six off Stephenson. Australia scored the required runs in the last over of the day.

England in its second innings scored 294 runs (Hutton 21, Washbrook 32, Robertson 84, Hammond 33, Edrich 50 and Robins 33). Pepper took four wickets for 80 runs, Ellis two for 33 and Price two for 40. Australia in its second innings for four wickets down scored 107 runs (Hassett 37, Pepper 54). Australia won by six wickets.
