THE PRICE OF MILK

Sir, —I would very much like to ask you how much longer this wrangling over the price of milk is going on, and how much good it is doing. I will say that any dairyman who supplies winter milk to a city at anything below a payable price ought to get his head read. Any tribunal can fix a price on an article nowadays, but you must remember he can’t make a.farmer produce the article, so you must agree with me that the farmer has the strongest weapon. Men may strike if they do not get exactly what they want to handle the produce, but if the produce is not there to handle, what is the use of striking? A wise man told me in the city yesterday that we think nothing of paying any price for luxury or pleasure; and why should we grumble to pay any price for the neccessities of life? If it does not suit a dairyman to supply milk in the winter at any price offered, surely he can bring his cows in in the spring and produce butter or cheese to export to those countries which will appreciate it. The farmers can all promise to produce certain commodities, but let me tell you that they will not be in the fashion if they keep their promises. - OVERRULED.
