INCREASE IN CHIMNEY FIRES
Appeal To Householders In his report for April to the Invercargill Fire Board yesterday the superintendent, Mr J. Philp, said that the number of chimney fires had increased suddenly because of a very cold spell of weather during the month. During April the brigade had received 18 calls, including 10 chimney and five property fires. Mr Philp added that if a call to a chimney fire came from a street box the brigade had to send out two engines, but if it was received by telephone a small truck could be sent. The chairman, Mr D. Harris, said the board was reluctant to ask the police to prosecute in all cases of chimney fires. It would appeal to householders to co-operate by keeping their chimneys reasonably clean. If the number of chimney fires was not reduced the board would have to ask the police to prosecute. It w'as also mentioned that there were now four chimney sweeps in Invercargill and householders had no excuse for not having their chimneys cleaned.
