R.S.P.C.A. SUMMONSES CAUSE STRIKE
(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 22. Mineworkers at a large New South Wales colliery struck today because the R.S.P.C.A. had issued summonses against two wheelers for allegedly ill-using pit horses. The men may not resume until the cases are dealt with, possibly in a fortnight’s time. The mine produces 1200 tons of coal a day. Seven collieries are idle in the State today, the total loss of coal being 8200 tons, the heaviest for any single day since VE Day. Following the unauthorized VE Day stoppages, an appeal by the miners’ leaders to the men for all-out production to shorten the Pacific war had cut strike losses drastically.
