Mrs George Leith, Otahuti, left yesterday to spend a holiday at Hokitika. Mrs W. R. Mayhew, Rugby street, returned at the weekend from a holiday at Dunedin. Mr and Mrs A. St. C. Macgregor, of Nelson, are the guests of Mr L. S. Beath, Gala street. Mrs W. L. Cunningham, Castle Downs, Dipton, who has been visiting Queenstown, has returned home. Mr and Mrs Warburton, Wilfrid street, Georgetown, have returned from an extended holiday in Central Otago. Miss Raynor Huffadine, Dunedin, is visiting her mother, Mrs J. H. Huffadine, Nelson street. Mrs D. Lamont, and Miss D. Shaw, Wellington, are spending a holiday in Invercargill. Mrs Robin Shaw, Ma-waro, South Canterbury, and her sister, Miss Norris, Willowbridge, who have been staying with Mrs W. J. Moffett, Alice street, have returned north. There.were nine tables in play at the weekly meeting of the Bridge Circle of the Women’s Club on Monday evening. The prize-winners were Mrs J. H. Turnbull (highest score), and Miss F. Anderson (hidden number). The wedding took place on March 3, at St. Matthew’s Church, Brixton, London, of Warrant Officer Reginald Wilfrid Buddle, youngest son of Mrs and the late Mr Buddle, of Invercargill, and Miss Patricia Rundle, step-daughter of Dr and Mrs Murray, of Upper Tulse Hill, Brixton. The bride’s sister, Miss Yvonne Rundle, attended the bride. Flight Sergeant J. Robinson was best man. "Wild Decembers,” by Clemence Dane, was the play read by members of the Play Reading Circle of the Women’s Club last night. “Wild Decembers” is the story of the Bronte family and of the making of "Anne Grey,” “Jane Eyre” and “Wuthering Heights.” The tragedy is lifted by the occasional convincing humour of English village life. The cast was as follows: The Rev. P. Bronte, Mrs C. E. Watts; Charlotte Bronte, Mrs H. R. Kingsland; Emily Bronte, Mrs D. Mulvey; Anne Bronte, Mrs J. S. Robbie; Patrick Branwell Bronte, Miss D. Washer; Tabby, Mrs Crooks; the Rev. Arthur Nicholls, Mrs E. R. Latham; Monsieur Heger, Mrs K. J. H. Davies; Madame Heger, Miss V. Roscoe; Mademoiselle Blanche and the doctor, Mrs N. F. Sansom; Mr George Smith, Mrs W. W. Millar; junior partner, Mrs A. C. Dickens; Miss Wooler, Miss N. England; Ellen Nussey, Mrs H. Parker; Mr Thackeray and chorus, Mrs A. F. Ritchie Crawford. ENGAGEMENT The engagement is announced of Daphne Kathleen, second' daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Dawson, East Road, Invercargill, to Percy Charles, only son of Mr and Mrs H. H. Ansley, Timaru. w
WOMEN TEACHERS ANNUAL CONFERENCE Lively discussions took place on matters of vital importance to all teachers, particularly the new salary scheme, staffing difficulties and reduction of classes, at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Women Teachers’ Association in Wellington. Remits were passed on these topics and will be presented to. the Minister of Education. It was unanimously agreed that the association should affiliate with the National Council of Women. A discussion on needlework in schools resulted in delegates being instructed to investigate the subject more fully with their branches. • , ’ Miss A. T. Tizard presided at the meeting, and women teachers from all over the Dominion attended. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Miss A. T. Tizard, South Canterbury; vice-presidents, Miss E. B. Pay, Manawatu, Miss M. Vr Kennedy, North Canterbury; hon. secretary, Miss G. Jarman, North Canterbury; hon. treasurer. Miss E. E.
